Isabella Gutierrez-Foster is a recurring character on The Fosters. She is the daughter of Ana Gutierrez-Foster, the stepdaughter of Mike Foster and the biological maternal half-sister of Mariana and Jesus Adams Foster. She makes her first appearance in Wreckage.
Biography[]
The father of Isabella is unknown. In the beginning of season 2B, it was assumed that Mike, who is also Brandon's father, could be the father of Ana's baby. However, Ana later states that he isn't and never says who the dad is.
In the season 2 finale, Ana, Mariana, and Jesus are in the car while Ana is driving when Ana goes into labor. As Ana drives to the hospital while in labor pain, another vehicle crashes into them and causes a fatal car accident. Isabella was then born and appears to be healthy despite the crash interrupting the labor.
Physical Appearance[]
Isabella has brown eyes and long brown hair. She is portrayed by Gianna and Isabella Garcia.
Series[]
Isabella is seen in a baby carriage as Ana is unable to properly breast feed due to neck and potential back injuries as a result of the car crash. Mariana is then seen tending to her when she cries, having been spending a large amount of time in the previous three weeks and helping tend to her. Mariana has even begun reading child rearing books for young mothers and is clearly happy to have a good relationship with her new little sister.
She encourages Ana to try to breastfeed Isabella, despite Ana's back and neck brace, but Ana says that she pumped some breast milk earlier for her since she can't breastfeed with the brace on. As Mariana goes off to feed her sister, Ana looks guilty that while she can be clean and sober for Isabella, she was not for Mariana or Jesus.
Later, Mariana comes over again and is shocked to see that Ana has now taken her back and neck braces off and is breastfeeding Isabella on her own. Mariana wants to help, but Ana turns her down. When Mariana tries instructing her on how to breast feed, Ana essentially tells her that she knows what to do and encourages her to go have fun with her boyfriend while he is in town. Mariana instead feels rejected at this urge and leaves, a bit hurt.
Ana wants Isabella to get baptized as it is important to her family and wants to have Mariana be Isabella's godmother. In order to have the title, Mariana is to be baptized as well. Before the baptism, Mariana is unable to go through with it due to not agreeing with the Catholic church's views towards homosexuality. This results in Mariana not becoming Isabella's godmother. However, she declares that she doesn't need a title in order to keep looking out for her little sister. After this, Isabella gets baptized, but Ana is nowhere to be found.
However, Ana eventually shows up, emotional, to the Adams Foster's household. With her parents present, Ana confesses how she doesn't feel a mother-child connection between her and Isabella. Scared, she tells Stef and Lena how she thinks Isabella is better left in their care instead of hers. However, Stef and Lena assure Ana that she is likely suffering postpartum depression and should seek professional help to better cope.
If and When
AJ is seen playing with Isabella at Mike's house and then hands her back to Ana. After AJ leaves for school, Mike offers for Ana and Isabella to move in with him.
